Google Gemini’s Nano Banana engine has taken the internet by storm. Users on social media are trying their hands at the latest trends with Gemini. This includes creating 3D figurines from images, or even converting your selfie into a vintage saree look. India has turned out to be the biggest market for Nano Banana, Google has revealed.

The Gemini app tops the charts for free apps on both Google Play and Apple’s App Store. According to Gemini Apps’ multimodal generation lead, David Sharon, India has the highest usage of Nano Banana globally. While this has allowed users to bring out their creativity with AI, it has also raised concerns over the rapid influx of AI-generated images online.

Social media is a place where people try to showcase the best versions of themselves. With AI, things are only getting easier. Now, you can create an image of being on vacation anywhere in the world with just a few clicks. The quality of AI-generated images is so good that you can easily fool many of your friends, or perhaps get fooled by some. Another concern is of course, privacy – What does Google do with your data? Where is this data stored? What if someone misuses your data?

All images generated by Google Gemini come with a diamond-shaped watermark, similar to the Gemini logo. Moreover, Google embeds a SynthID in all images created by its tools. This allows Google to flag any AI-generated image made from Gemini. Though users are not able to see this SynthID.

Google recognises that the current measures might not be enough to detect AI content. A person can easily crop out the watermark before posting an AI-generated image on social media.

According to TechCrunch, David Sharon revealed plans to create a new detection system. Google is currently testing this platform with researchers and experts. The company will release a version of this platform for consumers, ensuring that the average user can also detect an AI-generated image easily.

However, there is no information available on when such a platform could be rolled out.

Google’s stance on privacy concerns with Nano Banana
A major concern while using AI models for editing images is privacy. Users who are jumping on the latest AI trends are not really thinking about what happens to their personal data. When you upload your selfie to a model like Nano Banana, you might get the desired look you want to share on social media, but does it put your privacy at risk?

Moreover, one can use an image of any person without their consent to create images via any AI model. This further rings alarm bells over potential misuse.

David Sharon gave a simple response to the concerns, affirming Google’s stance on the situation. He said, as quoted by TechCrunch, “When a user asks us to fulfill their query, we do our best to fulfill that query. We don’t try to assume what the user’s intent is.”

According to Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, the tech giant collects all information you provide to the chatbot, as well as the responses generated by Gemini. While the company claims that the data is auto-deleted based on an account’s preset settings, there are no specific details on how the data is
